On the eve of an impending government shutdown do you know what impact it would have on your business?
If you were starting a business virtually all of the information would continue to be available to you from government website like the SBA, IRS, and others. So, no big deal there if you are seeking information. Your bank is not impacted unless you are applying for an SBA loan.
If you are applying for a tax ID number, that is an automated process and there would be no impact on your processing the paperwork, although they might send you a letter if they uncover issues at a later date with your application.
If you are applying for patents, visas, or other government face to face forms you will have to wait until after the government returns to business as usual. The Patent Office continues via web services for basic information and forms submissions. Reviews of those forms or patent issuances for anything but a provisional patent will likely be delayed several more weeks past when the government reopens for business.
Government funding continues for mandated programs (Social Security for example), but be prepared for longer lines at security checks, or for crossing the borders.
For small businesses just starting up the impact will have little effect. If however, you happen to be operating on a grant or performing services or producing items for a government contract stand by for a very long delay after things "return to normal" as the bottlenecks cause delays.
For the rest of us, running our business will continue as normal, open for business, still wondering why the congress seems to be self-destructing itself with every issue it faces.
If however, our government defaults by not raising the debt ceiling shortly, watch for a not subtle impact on people's spending as uncertainty increases. If the government, and us by definition, allow our default on payments, our credit rating will drop to nearly junk status and could take decades to return to a healthy status.
In spite of the gloomy language, and with all the attention being placed on Washington and the elected officials, we, as entrepreneurs, continue to do our business, create new product, services, and companies, regardless. And a public service reminder message, just remember when it comes time to vote in the next election if you are impacted in any way.
