Entrepreneurial authors get their own club

"Authors who develop their communication and leadership skills have more successful businesses and sell more books," says Carma Spence, Area E2 Governor for Toastmasters District One. "That's why I'm founding the Entrepreneurial Authors’ Club here in Long Beach. I want to give local writers and authors the opportunity to build speaking and leadership skills in a safe environment with like-minded entrepreneurs."

The mission of Toastmasters International is to empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders. Entrepreneurial Authors’ Club takes that mission and applies it to the unique needs of authors who are building a business around their book or books.

A typical Toastmasters meeting includes three segments: prepared speeches, evaluations of those speeches and impromptu speaking. "We'll have all those speaking and feedback opportunities, as well," said Spence. "But we're also going to include one segment that will really help our members improve their ability to sell their books: time to practice their introductory, 30-second 'elevator speech' and feedback on how well they did.

At each meeting, members will put their name in a bowl and two to three names will be drawn to present their pitch. "Doing it this way accomplishes two things," said Spence. "It keeps members on their toes so they can be prepared whenever an opportunity to talk about their book comes up, and it provides an forum for constructive feedback on whether what they are saying is effective or not."

The club will meet at Rebel Bite in downtown Long Beach. "Not only do they have an excellent meeting space, their food is both delicious and reasonably priced," said Spence. Members and guests are encouraged to arrive early to grab a bite to eat. Rebel Bite's menu includes a variety of spicy fusion dishes from gourmet pizza to spare ribs to pasta to "sammiches."

The club will official launch on Tuesday, February 11, at 7pm and will meet every second and fourth Tuesday of the month from that point on.
