Women entrepreneurs in Springfield are smart, savvy and stylish. Think of the Business Betties - ladies that present themselves well. But Mattel's Barbie doesn't reflect that. According to an article published today, February 25 on CNNMoney, the new Entrepreneur Barbie is a throwback to the 1980s and an insult to women entrepreneurs everywhere.
Oh, Barbie's outfit is cute and all, but if she walked into a boardroom to get funding in her little fuchsia drop-waist dress, leather briefcase and power stilettos, no one at the table - man or woman - would take her seriously. Women entrepreneurs and CEOs have been fighting for years to shed the fluffy image that Barbie is now bringing back.
And women entrepreneurs aren't very rare. According to the article, 20 percent of companies with $1 million or more in revenue are led by women. Besides, there is also no "entrepreneur" uniform. Women entrepreneurs are more likely to be wearing jeans and carrying a cool laptop bag, not tottering in heels and carrying a leather briefcase. (Could Entrepreneur Barbie's briefcase even hold a laptop? Maybe an iPad mini, if that, which isn't ideal for multitasking.)
