Enthusiasts kick off craft beer week at Royal Oak farmers market

More than 1,000 craft beer fans poured into the Royal Oak Farmer’s Market Friday night for Powers Distributing’s second annual Craft Beer Expo. The event was a huge success, featuring 27 breweries, and raising more than $7,500 for the Romeo Lion’s Club.

Michigan craft brewers were represented by 10 breweries, with the rest coming from across the U.S., including one making it’s Michigan debut—California’s Coronado Brewing.

“We attribute this year’s success to working with the amazing craft breweries and partner organizations including the Romeo Lions Club, Hollywood Market, WRIF, Yelp, UBER, Treat Dreams, Detroit BBQ Co., Concrete Cuisine and People’s Pierogi Collective,” said Dan Bryant, general manager, Craft and Specialty Division, Powers Distributing.

With 12 beer tasting tokens at my disposal, I sampled two from Coronado, including Orange Avenue Wit and Mermaid Red. The wit is a perfect summer sipper, balancing slight sweetness with citrus, while the red had a nicely balanced hoppiness and smooth finish.

Oscar Blues represented with its Ten Fidy-- an imperial stout that clocks in at, you guessed it, 10.5% ABV. Bold flavors of chocolate, cocoa and toasted malt—one of my favorites of the night.

Kuhnhenn Brewing shared their DRIPA – a double rice IPA featuring intense pine notes and hops.

Tommyknocker – with a name like that, you know the beer is good!

I tried the North Peak Dubbel—one of their bottles that I hadn't previously sampled, but will be stocking up next time I see it in the store. Intense flavors of dark fruit, only slightly sweet, full bodied, great mouthfeel.

Right Brain was in the mix with a Strawberry Fields cream ale. On a friend’s suggestion, I asked them to top it off with some CEO Stout. Strawberries and chocolate, with some espresso on the finish. Dessert.

Thirsty Dog brought Cerberus, a Belgian style tripel clocking in at 10% ABV. The style is appropriately represented with dried fruit, bread, yeast and candy notes.

One last standout was the Mojo IPA by Boulder Beer of Colorado. Pine, hops and fruit with a solid clean finish.

There were several more beers on hand, but I had sadly run out of tokens. Plus, it was about time to call it a night.
