Entertainer and former Public Enemy rapper Flava Flav has pleaded guilty and accepted a plea deal in a Las Vegas domestic violence case involving the teenage son of his longtime girlfriend. According to a report by the Associated Press on April 14, the former VH1 reality star was sentenced to probation and more counseling as a result of the deal.

Flava Flav, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton, has been out of the public eye for quite some time. He made news in 2012 when he was accused of threatening his longtime girlfriend’s son with a knife. According to Clark County District Attorney spokeswoman Tess Driver, he pleased guilty to misdemeanors attempted battery with substantial bodily harm and battery constituting domestic violence.

As a result he was given a one-year suspended sentence along with 12 family counseling sessions, but it couldn’t been worse for the rapper best known for his trademark clock necklace and his wild personality. He could’ve received up to 12 years in prison. After court, Flava Flav said in response to his sentence that he was lucky that he is “not behind bars.”

Drayton’s attorney in the case, Kristina Wildeveld, echoed her client’s relief and said that the plea deal was constructed so that Drayton wouldn’t have a felony crime on his record. She said her client never wanted to have a felony and therefore they were able to come to “an agreement that was acceptable to everyone.”

Neither the teen, now the legal age of 18, nor his mother were in court when Drayton entered his plea and was sentence. Despite the confrontation, the former reality star told the judge he “loves his son” and has learned from the incident, an incident that should’ve never happened in the first place. Drayton could still face jail time if he fails to complete the court-ordered counseling sessions. His attention now turns to another case involving speeding and driving without a license in New York.
