Entertaiment news observations of the week - Letterman tranny joke, kooky Mariah and more

The ABC Television Network has picked up a pilot starring Carlos Mencia. The show is said to be a family comedy based on Mencia's life and stand-up comedy act. I wonder if George and Elaine are going to appear on the show? Or maybe the Tool Time Girls? Original idea? No. But it may be good because Mencia is very funny.

Just when we thought Mariah Carey might not be coo coo for Coco Puffs, she proves us wrong. Check out the video of her rambling on during her acceptance speech at the Palm Springs International Film Festival awards. Maybe she was drunk, maybe she was stoned, or maybe she is just wacky. In any event, it was funny.

David Letterman is taking some heat from human and gay rights groups for a bit on his show on Tuesday night which referenced Amanda Simpson, the transgendered woman who was appointed by President Obama to a Federal position. She is highly qualified for the position with numerous degrees. But, come on, lighten up people. You do understand the concept of comedy don't you? She is now a public figure and fair game. I didn't find the brief comedy bit on his Late Night show to be offensive or derogatory in any way. The fact that it pointed out that a man (as I believe would be the case with most men) would be freaked out to discover, after the fact, that he had been intimate with someone who was previously a man speaks more about the man than about Simpson. If Letterman needs to apologize for anything it should be for not having a funnier tranny joke.

"The People's Choice Awards" were last night. Guess who the big winners were? Yep, vampires. Big surprise. Prediction for next year: Avatar. Dolphin's are said to be so intelligent that they may be in line to get more rights. Perhaps next year we can watch the "Dolphin's Choice Awards."
