Enter The Golden Dragon by way of the Sideshow Theatre

Jonathan L. Green, Artistic Director of Sideshow Theatre Company, fell in love with the play The Golden Dragon the first time he heard it. Unfortunately, it had been scooped up by The Studio Theatre in D.C. in 2011. So instead, Mr. Green was presented with Idomeneus, another play by Roland Shimmelpfennig, one of the most produced playwrights in Europe. That production won a Best Ensemble Jeff Award for the Sideshow Theatre Company, so everything seemed to work out well all the way around.

Now the Sideshow finally got a hold of The Golden Dragon and is presenting that play’s Chicago premiere, currently running through February 23, 2014. But that is not the only premiere involved--The Golden Dragon is Sideshow’s first production as a resident company at Victory GardensRichard Christiansen Theatre. Chay Yew, VG Artistic Director, chose to provide four companies (Sideshow Theatre Company, Bailiwick Chicago, Rasaka Theatre Company, and Teatro Vista) with a physical home so they could nurture their audience bases, develop their respective boards, and fully realize the next phases of their own strategic plans.

Sideshow Artistic Director Jonathan L. Green observes, "It sometimes seems that with so many new companies around the city, Chicago audiences want to see who will exist in 2-3 years, so they wait to see what a company will do in that time." This move to Victory Gardens will definitely help Sideshow grow its audience base with a consistent location. "Come to a Sideshow production as adventure explorers and take the ride with us because that’s what we’re here to do. We want an audience to feel taken care of and willing to take the risk with us."

Always up for adventure, Sideshow also produces the Chicago League of Lady Arm Wrestlers (CLLAW) for its 18th bout on Saturday, March 8. The event benefits Sideshow Theatre Company and other local charities. Even their gala is an adventure! On Saturday, May 17, Sideshow’s third annual gala celebrates the 114th birthday celebration of the company's long-lost relative, Phineas Charlington "Chucky" Buckford-Westington. The gala also lives up to the Sideshow mission – Familiar Stories – Unorthodox Methods – Perpetually Curious.

Don’t miss the final weekend of The Golden Dragon – Curtain times: Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 3:00 pm at 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue. Tickets available at www.victorygardens.org or by calling (773) 871-3000.
