Enrollment for Ohio's high risk insurance pool will end on Saturday

The Ohio High Risk Pool was set up for Ohioans with heart failure, HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other pre-existing conditions who have been denied access to affordable health coverage. The deadline to enroll for this program is Saturday, March 2.

The federal government has asked states who provide Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plans to suspend enrollment for new applicants because the $5 billion in federal funding for the plans is nearly used up.

All applications and accompanying documentation, including a check or money order, must be received by mail or dropped off no later than 5 p.m. on Saturday at Medical Mutual's office located at 17800 Royalton Road, Strongsville, Ohio 44136. For eligibility requirements and how to enroll, see the Ohio High Risk Pool web site.

The 3,600 Ohioans enrolled in the program will continue to be covered until January 1, 2014, when provisions under the Affordable Care Act will prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage to Americans with pre-existing conditions.

Enrollment for the federal Health Insurance Marketplace will begin on October 1. Health coverage under this plan will become effective on January 1.
