Tenuta di Bibbiano is a fifth generation estate vineyard/winery located in the hearth of the Chianti Classico region. The Bibbiano estate has about 60 acres separated on three different vineyards surrounded by olive groves. The estate is keeping with technology changes in viticulture and vinification process that helps showing the true terroir while maintaining the traditional style of Chianti Classico.

Great opportunity to try four wines from Tenuta di Bibbiano at St. Vincent Tavern located at the Mission District in San Francisco this past Tuesday May 14, including a 1999 vintage of the Chianti Classico Reserva Capannino. The wines are represented in the USA by Marathon Wine Brokers. Tom Capo from Marathon and Corinna Politi from the Bibbiano Estate were present at the event to talk about the wines.

Bibbiano 2010 Chianti Classico: Youthful expression of 97% Sagiovese and 3% Canaiolo. Ripe cherries and cranberry aromas upfront with notes of lavender and earth. On the palate this wine feels vibrant and fresh with cherry, raspberry and cranberry and notes of sweet vanilla. An everyday red wine that will please your palate with every sip. Try it with salmon, chicken, pasta with red sauce and your favorite pizza. You can find this wine for around $22.

Bibbiano 2009 Chianti Classico Monternello: A 100% Sangiovese, full of character. A bouquet of dark fruit upfront: plum, dark cherry and fig with hints of tobacco, red flowers and oak. On the palate this wine feels more complex with dark fruit, cranberry and vanillin along herbal and earthy notes. Very balanced wine that will pair well with a more heavier dish like roasted meats, chicken cacciatore, pasta with meat sauce and beef stew. Average retail price of $27.

2008 Chianti Classico Reserva Capannino: 100% Sangiovese Grosso. Great aromas of ripe cherry, cranberry, plum, lavender and brown spices. On the palate this wine shows great flavors of ripe cherry, cranberry, dried mushrooms along firm but smooth tannins. Well crafted Sangiovese to enjoy by itself or paired with your favorite red meat or game dish. You can purchase this wine for a little under $40.

1999 Chianti Classico Reserva Capannino: Great to taste this older vintage alongside the 2008, beautifully aged with more mellow tannins and red fruit like cherry, cranberry and hints of lavender on the nose with notes of vanilla and oak on the palate.

A great delight to be able to try these wines with food. St. Vincent Tavern, from acclaimed Sommelier, author and now restaurateur David Lynch, offered delicious dishes to pair with the wines; a green salad with butter beans and light dressing, a couple of crostini, hand roll soft pretzels and sausage. The wines paired well with the food, both the wines and the food tasted great along each other.
