Coming across a cold day in West Palm Beach is a rare and fantastic treat. Now this might not seem like a big event to our friends visiting from the north, but for us native Floridians its an exciting thing. So now you have this wonderful weather, temperature hovering in the low sixties, nice brisk breeze, clear skies, but what to do? On days like these you will find most people enjoying the cool air walking down their favorite shopping street or sitting outside a charming cafe. You could head to the nearest Starbucks, which no doubt can be found within a hundred yards in any direct, but who wants to be generic? Instead, allow me to suggest a couple places that you can enjoy a bit of local life and this rare meteorological treat at the same time.
If you head to the east side of West Palm Beach, you can spend a quiet and relaxing afternoon on Lake Avenue. Lake Ave is a quiet street where you can find some very low key restaurants, bars, and shops. The atmosphere is distinctly beachy, being only a couple minutes drive away from the Lake Worth Pier. You can find a collection of small shops selling items ranging from beautiful shell jewelry brought back Southeast Asia at Bali Imports, unique, high fashioned secondhand items at Off the Wall Consignments, and even some lovely English tea at Beresford Manor. If you are hungry there are several restaurants where you can get fresh caught fish dishes, Italian creations, Florida Keys inspired cuisine, or a stout pilsner of authentic German beer.
Once you have had lunch and stocked up on beachwear you can head straight down the road to the Lake Worth Pier. Lake Worth Pier is one of the most popular public beaches in West Palm Beach and always plays host to a wide variety of people. While parking is free near the Lake Ave shops, you will have to pay a small fee at the beach. The waves at Lake Worth beach are better than some but its still unlikely that you will see Kelly Slater out on the water.
If you think its too cold to get your feet wet you can always enjoy a walk on the pier where you will get to see many local fisherman with their long lines in the water. Lake Worth Beach also boasts a small park where many people will rent private pavilions to enjoy weekend barbecues. West Palm Beach has an enormous variety sites, cultures, and exciting experiences to take in, the Lake Worth Avenue area is just one of many.
