Houston offers an adequate weather to play outdoors sports all year long, but right now is the best time of the year! Get out and enjoy the outdoors. It's a time you can even be sure the sweat is caused by your level of activity, and not by the 100% humidity 100F weather that will take over in August!
Here are some favorite Houstonian sports:
By yourself (or with others):
Golf courses under $30 (some are early or twilight tee times - listed in no particular order):
Sanctuary Golf Resort ($20&up)
Heron Lakes ($22&up)
Wedgewood - Houston ($27&up)
Texas National Golf Club ($26&up)
Newport Golf Club ($23&up)
Glenbrook Golf Course ($29&up)
Cypress Lakes ($25&up)
Columbia Lakes ($25&up)
Rent a kayak or a bike:
On the Bayou: there is a local bayou outfitter that rents kayaks, and even bikes.
In the woodlands: Paddlesports is the local outfitter
Or pick up your equipment at REI ride it anywhere you want (they’ll even have some recommendations for you): from the downtown bayou to clear lake.
The city of Houston even has a website with suggested outdoor activities.
In teams (work or social):
There are many associations and clubs you can join, here are starting points:
Volleyball: almost year-round at Third Coast Volleyball
Tennis: there are many free neighborhood courts
Softball or flag football (some leagues are free at Houston Sportsplex)
Soccer can be played in a variety of settings (this is a popular sport in Houston due to the various immigrant populations)
Outdoor karting (often with Mini-golf nearby!)
Monkey Sports & Bayou City Outdoors offer various sport leagues; you will surely find one that meets your skill level and social expectations.
As you try things out, please post a comment here and share your feedback with all Houstonians…maybe find a team-mate through your postings!
Finally, if you are not yet up for getting off your feet, then enjoy something more laid-back and work your way up to something more active later – there are MANY beautiful days ahead!
