Electric bikes, scooter, mopeds, kits
From baby-boomers to college students, electric bikes have become a popular option for people looking for alternative ways to get around town. Eco Wheelz, 198 S. Main Street, Plymouth, is the first electric bike store in Southeast Michigan to exclusively provide electric bicycles, scooters, mopeds and conversion kits.
If you are considering an electric bicycle, it's important that you understand the pros and cons to make the most of these fun and eco-friendly products. If your normal mode of transportation is an automobile, there are some luxuries you will be giving up when riding an electric bike; but the great benefits far outweigh the cons.
The Advantages of Electric
1.) Much Cheaper than Gasoline
One of the biggest advantages of electric bicycles is the extremely low cost to operate and maintain one. On average, it costs less than a penny per mile to operate an electric bike. In comparison, it costs about $0.15 per mile to purchase gasoline - or 1500% more to operate a gas-powered vehicle. Add the license costs, insurance, registration, maintenance and other fees of other motorized vehicles and the cost skyrockets. According to U.S. Government figures, the average cost of driving and maintaining a motor vehicle in the United States is $0.54 per mile.
2.) Extended Range and Reduced Stress
An electric bike allows you to pedal further and faster than you would on a normal bicycle. For this reason, electric bikes are great for commuting; whether it's to work or for a casual neighborhood stroll. Plus, you will reduce both physical and mental stress by avoiding traffic and other hazards associated with motor vehicles. Nothing beats the fresh air, cool breeze and sunshine on your face!
3.) Exercise is Optional
Having the option to pedal is an advantage in two ways: First, if will get some exercise, as you can pedal just like a normal bicycle. Plus, pedaling will help you go faster and extend your range. But if you are tired, don't have the energy to pedal or don't want to get sweaty or exhausted, you can use power to assist you.
4.) Safe and Easy to Operate
Electric bicycles are safe and easy to operate. Most e-bikes include intelligent safety features such as power cut-off protection, and every product uses standard electrical safety components such as circuit breakers and fuses to protect riders. And unlike gasoline, there is virtually no explosive danger with batteries. Limited speed also reduces the risk of fatal injuries in the event of an accident. Plus, you don't need to worry about registration or insurance - and a license is not required in most states.
5.) No Smelly Fumes or Exhaust
For environmentally conscious individuals, the most important benefit of choosing electric-power is the positive impact on the environment. Unlike gas-guzzling vehicles, electric bicycles don't burn fossil fuels and release no harmful carbon emissions. Although power plants indirectly produce CO2 to charge the battery, the impact is minuscule in comparison to automobiles. Not only does lowering CO2 emissions reduce pollution and improve air quality, but it might also limit the effects of global warming.
6.) Fun for All Ages
Not only are electric bikes cheaper, safer and cleaner to operate than gas-powered vehicles - they're fun for people of all ages. Electric bikes are a great way for college students to get to class or cruise around campus. Employees will appreciate effortless rides to work with being sweaty or exhausted. And retirees will find electric bicycles especially useful when performing daily tasks or getting around town.
Lost Luxuries - The Disadvantages
1.) Limited Range and Speed
Most electric bicycles are limited to a range of 15-40 miles per charge (depending on the model and battery type) so you won't be able to use an electric bike to go on long road trips or to drive extremely long distances. And since most electric bikes are limited to 20 mph or less, don't expect to get there immediately. Although you can avoid most road obstacles (ie: traffic, stop lights, intersections, etc.) by riding a bicycle, it will still probably take a little longer to arrive at your destination.
2.) Less Security and Protection
Obviously, you will be less protected from harsh weather and and adverse road conditions when riding a bicycle (of any type). Although you can operate these products in the rain, you will definitely get wet without added protection. And depending on your location and seasonal weather patterns, your electric bike might be completely side-lined for several months during the Winter.
