Who doesn’t love oatmeal? You can use it to make a nice hot bowl of cereal on a cold wintry day or indulge in some of those much loved oatmeal cookies that your grandmother used to make.
Whichever way you choose to enjoy them, from steel-cut to instant, we think a bowl of steamy oats is a comforting, healthy way to start the day.
We love McCann’s Steel Cut Irish Oats, which we used to make some delicious oatmeal cookies. We also tried our hand making Irish porridge, which was delicious. Here’s the recipe so you can try it on your own:
Into 4 cups of briskly boiling water sprinkle 1 cup of oatmeal, stirring well. When the porridge is smooth and beginning to thicken, reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Traditionally served with fresh buttermilk, Irish porridge is also good with milk or cream and brown sugar or honey, or with butter.
