What’s up at the Brattle Theatre during February school vacation week? It’s the annual Bugs Bunny Film Festival starring none other than that lovable carrot chomping rabbit, Bugs Bunny. The festival starts on Friday, February 17th and tickets are still available at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, MA.
Whether you’re a youngster or just young at heart, this cartoon film festival may be just the thing to tickle your funny bone and get you in out of the cold February weather in Boston and Cambridge.
2012 is the 100th birthday of Chuck Jones, the creator and director of many of the Looney Tunes cartoons, according to information from the Brattle Theatre in Camnridge, MA. So, the Brattle Theatre will be featuring both an All Bugs Revue and an All Chuck Jones ‘toons event in his honor.
History of Bugs Bunny cartoons
Bugs Bunny is an American animated character created in 1938 at Leon Schlesinger Productions, which later later Warner Brothers. Cartoons. Bugs, a chatty gray rabbit is best known for his sarcastic personality and role as a “trickster.”
Bugs has appeared in more films than any other cartoon character and is the ninth most portrayed film personality in the world according to NPR. Bugs Bunny even has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
According to Bugs Bunny: 50 Years and Only One Grey Hare, Bugs’ fictitious back story claims that he was” born on July 27, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York in a warren under Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers."
The creation of the Bugs cartoon character itself is the work of many animators and staff, including Tex Avery, who directed A Wild Hare, Bugs' debut role, and Robert McKimson, who created the definitive "Bugs Bunny" character design.
Bugs has a Flatbush accent and a variety of catchy retorts with the best known being "Eh... What's up, doc?", usually spoken while Bugs chews a carrot.
