Every year for the month of February, San Diego presents Museum Month. It gives San Diegans a chance to get out and about and explore museums for half price admission. Residents can pick up a free pass from their local Macy’s with a list of museums and their visitor hours.
The California Surf Museum (312 Pier View Way, Oceanside, CA) has a mere $5 admission which means during February, it’s only $2 and change. The museum is well put together with a history of surfing and San Onofre: the birthplace of California beach culture. Surfboards and history exhibits take up the small area. It provides interesting information about the area and it’s cool to see how the culture has evolved. A bonus is that just a two blocks away from the museum is the beautiful Oceanside pier. Stroll down and enjoy the scenery for free.
At the Maritime Museum on North Harbor Drive in San Diego, visitors have the chance to explore several ships and submarines docked in the harbor. Each boat has its own history and you can weave your way through at your leisure. The Star of India is a highlight and on my recent visit, a pirate-themed children’s birthday party was in full effect there. Looked like fun! Right now a Maritime Museum project of rebuilding a replica of the San Salvador ship is taking place plank by plank just a short drive from the museum. It is included with the museum admission. Also, for $5 extra visitors can schedule a boat tour on the Pilot Boat.
These are just two on the list of museums that are half-price admission for the rest of the month. Share with me your favorites!
