Ever hear of the Yard House? No, it isn’t a landscaping business or a place to purchase new shrubs or grass seed. It is an upscale food and drink establishment located in West Houston. Here are the facts:
Name: The Yard House
Location: Houston’s City Centre, 800 W. Sam Houston Parkway
Phone: 713-461-9273
Cuisine: American
The Yard House is actually a restaurant chain with approximately thirty locations in ten U.S. states. This eating and drinking establishment is known for its casual bar and grill atmosphere, but with a premium twist. The menu at the Yard House includes American fare, but many menu options are based on ethic foods and are presented like a work of art, which is something you would not find in a typical bar and grill.
Each Yard House location offers a similar atmosphere that could be described as casual, but classy. A centrally- located bar features dozens of beer taps circling the interior section. Booths and tables surround the central bar, with artwork on the walls and multiple flat screen televisions for sports and other viewing. Background music at the Yard House includes a selection of classic rock that, combined with the other aspects of Yard House, makes for a casual, friendly place to unwind with friends or family in a relaxed setting.
The Yard House offers a very large menu containing more than one- hundred items, but the standout at the Yard House isn’t necessarily the food- it is the beer. Houston’s Yard House has about one- hundred taps serving close to ninety different beer options, with styles ranging from light lager to Belgian ale. Not only is the beer selection diverse, it is also well- organized on the beer menu, sorted by style and listed from the traditionally less complex styles to the more complex. The Yard House even has special beer blends such as an Eclipse (Guinness Stout combined with Blue Moon Belgian White) or a Great Ape (Guinness Stout combined with Pyramid Apricot Ale). In addition, for those who think of beer as dessert, the Yard House offers beer floats such as Young’s Double Chocolate Stout or Lindeman's Framboise combined with a scoop of ice cream.
Prices at the Yard House are a little higher than those of similar restaurants. The beer is a little more expensive, too, and a family of four could easily run up a one- hundred (notice how many times the number one- hundred is mentioned here?) dollar or more tab between food and drinks. These prices are certainly not over the top, but they are higher than other casual dining restaurants like Applebee’s or Chili’s.
Bar and Grill establishments are commonplace, but the Yard House offers a unique combination of food, drink, and atmosphere that sets it apart from the competition. The food and beverages might be a little costlier than many are prepared to pay, but the impressive selection and laid- back yet elegant atmosphere combine for a memorable experience.
