The National Wildlife Federation has a three-year goal to get 10 million more American children outdoors. Unlike when many of today's parents were younger, today's kids spend very little time outdoors each day.

Taking a nature hike doesn't cost anything and can be done anywhere. You may prefer a hiking trail at your local park, but you can also enjoy a nature hike in your own neighborhood.

A walk in the woods is a favorite for some families. The quiet of the woods allows you to hear the sounds of squirrels, birds and other small creatures in their natural habitat.

In the spring, you can enjoy the beauty of trees beginning to bloom. You may also see tulips, daffodils or crocuses in bloom on a spring nature walk.

During the summer, you will see flowers of every variety in bloom. You may also enjoy the sweet smell of honeysuckle in the woods.

In the fall, the sound of crisp leaves under your feet will be music to your ears. Watch closely and you'll see leaves flutter to the ground. The colors of fall are spectacular in the woods.

Many families move indoors during winter. Although the weather may be cold, winter is a great time for a nature hike in the woods. With the leaves gone from the trees, you can see a much longer distance in the woods.
