Talk about a hiker's delight: Here's a chance to mosey across England from coast to coast, over highlands, past leas and tarns and up 2,000-foot-high crags, across scenic mountain passes and through picture-postcard little towns – and at a hefty discount from what you'd normally pay for all this.
The deal, offered by English Lakeland Ramblers, is good for bookings made from now through March 31 for hiking tours across England's North Country scheduled May 5-20 and August 25-Sept. 9.
The tours start on the Irish Sea and end on the North Sea. Along the way, hikers will walk from one participating hotel to another (staying a couple of nights in some of them to avoid packing and unpacking every day) while their luggage is shlepped from place to place in vans.
The special discount of $350 per person brings the tab for the 16-day tour down to $4,600, including lodging in country inns and hotels, most meals, 14 guided hikes, local taxes, luggage transfers and more.
The coast-to-coast walking tours are among a dozen itineraries offered by English Lakeland Ramblers on 25 departure days this year from April through September. Other tours run from six to 16 nights including walks across Scottish highlands and islands, the English Lake District, Wales, Cornwall, the Cotswolds and a London/Cotswolds combo. Prices start at $2,850 per person, double occupancy.
Hikers can get a free brochure of all Ramblers tours for 2013 by calling the Montclair, Va.-based company at 1-(800) 725-8801.
