Children's Home + Aid is a organization that was started in 1883 to improving the lives of children and families throughout Illinois. Every year since 1989 the Children's Home + Aid has helped in the Blue Bow Campaign that was started by Bonnie Finney of Virginia who tied a blue ribbon around her car’s antenna in memory of her young grandson who was abused and killed by his parents.
The Blue Bow has come to represent the hidden bruises and scars of abused children and is recognized as the national symbol of child abuse prevention. Blue Bow events will be held throughout the month of April. The 2013 Blue Bow Campaign kickoff event will happen on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at the Fourth Presbyterian Church,126 E. Chestnut St. (Chestnut and Michigan Avenue) in Chicago.
The new Marshfield Child + Family Center will be holding their own Englewood Blue Bow event on Friday, April 5, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. at the Antioch Baptist Church, 415 W. Englewood Ave., in Chicago. They invite participants between the ages of 16-21 years of age to apply for their poetry contest. The theme is “Protecting Our Future” and should express what can be done to “Strengthen our Families Protect Our Future!” Participants are to act as a voice for yourself or those who suffer from abuse and/or violence, express how it makes you feel and how it is impacting the Englewood community and give solutions.
Rules are:
- Piece must be original and relate to theme
- No Swearing
- Participant between the ages of 16-21
- Submit by Friday, March 22, 2013 along with the submission form, click here,
- Able to present winning piece at Englewood Blue Bow event Friday, April 5 at 9 a.m.
