Research done recently with the use of MRI scans showed that many of the energy drinks sold on the market today cause detrimental effects to the heart. These effects include abnormally rapid heart contractions. The effects from drinking energy drinks can be seen for up to an hour after consumption. Many of these beverages contain large amounts of caffeine and taurine.
Energy drinks can be especially dangerous for people with heart problems. When the heart is forced to beat at an accelerated rate through no exertion of its own, the heart muscle can eventually weaken and possibly even result in a heartbeat that is abnormal.
Many of these beverages do not have as much caffeine as coffee; however, the combination of caffeine, sugar, and taurine seems to be responsible for the high heartbeat rhythms of people who drink them. As a result, it was recommended that children and adults with heart problems abstain from drinking energy drinks until more research can be done.
