Every second counts when a child is missing, regardless of whether the child was victim of a stranger abduction, parental kidnapping, or ran away from home. Unfortunately, not every case that is classified as a runaway is so, as we saw with the terrible abduction and torture of Michelle Knight by Ariel Castro. Authorities believed Knight had run away and 15 months after her abduction, her name was removed from the missing person’s database. It is because of cases like Knight’s that all diligence should be given to every missing child case, regardless of whether they are classified as a runaway or not.
Marta Mendez has been missing from Heflin, Alabama since Sept. 30, 2013. Authorities believe she is a runaway and may still be in the local area. Marta stands 5’3”, weighs 110 pounds and is Hispanic. She was born on March 23, 1997. One technique that is often used to determine if someone might be a runaway is to ask not only their age, but also their date of birth. Often times, runaways want to tell people they are older than they are; but may not have mastered a false birth date. It isn’t uncommon to find runaways will stumble, pause, stammer or stutter when giving their birth date to officials.
Marta Mendez’ case is handled by the Heflin Police Department in Alabama. If you have any information on her whereabouts, you are asked to contact the Heflin P.D. at 1-256-463-2292. Please call 911 in case of an emergency.
