Challenge your endurance with the final triathlon of the summer

The Hawaiian meaning of kawela is "the heat". This inaugural, end of summer, endurance triathlon will challenge you, as you embark on a journey past Kawela Bay, along Oahu's North Shore. You will start at Kailua Beach Park where you swim 1900 meters in the beautiful Lanikai waters. Once on your bike, you will travel 56 miles through "Keep the Country, Country" Kaneohe, Kahuku and the North Shore to Mokuleia and Waialua. Park your bike at the Waialua YMCA and head out for a half-marathon run, enjoying the breathtaking views of the Mokuleia coastline. Join Boca Hawaii for an awesome team of race organizers and active sponsors.

Race registration is now open. Entries are non-transferable and non-refundable and there are no race-day entries. Register online or visit Boca Hawaii to complete a paper application. This race is not an Ironman Qualifier.

Hawaii Speed & Quickness and YMCA
A portion of the proceeds from the Kawela Endurance Triathlon will benefit the non-profits, Hawaii Speed & Quickness, and the Waialua YMCA, which promote health and fitness for Hawaii's kids.


  • Swim: 1900 meters at Kailua Beach
  • Bike: 56 miles along Kaneohe and the North Shore
  • Run: 13.1 miles along Mokuleia and Waialua

  • Run gear will be collected when you pick-up your packet so come prepared with your bike to run special needs bag

Start location
Kailua Beach Park (Kailua, Island of Oahu) The swim will take place in waters fronting Kailua Beach. The swim is a 2 loop course with beach run exit in between each lap (exit and re-enter water); swim counter-clockwise, mostly with the ocean current.

Transition area #1 is at Kailua Beach Park, behind Kalapawai Market. Parking for athletes will be available at Lanikai Elementary School. They will be charging a fund-raising fee to benefit the school. The swim course map can be found here. The transition "T1" map can be found here.

Bike & run
The bike course is a point to point ride starting in Kailua and finishing at the Waialua YMCA Camp Erdman, transition area #2. The course is as follows: from Kailua Beach Park, Kaneohe Bay Drive to Kahekili, along North Shore coastline to Waialua (does not go through Haleiwa town), mostly tail wind. This is not a closed bike course. Morning traffic will be allowed to circulate. HPD will allow cyclists right-of-way when possible, but you must share the road and respect the traffic laws if/when necessary.

The run will take place along Farrington Hwy and finish at the YMCA Camp Erdman. The run is a 2 loop flat course with no intersections.

Post-race banquet & lodging
Athletes and friends will enjoy a post-race banquet at the Waialua YMCA Camp Erdman. Partake in good food and post-race stories by the ocean. Lodging at Camp Erdman is available. For reservations, contact Camp Erdman directly:

Kawela Endurance Triathlon is a USA Triathlon sanctioned event. Here are the USAT procedures:

  • Athletes must pick up packet prior to racing
  • Athlete must have photo ID and current USAT annual membership card or proof of a one-day license before receiving packet
  • Every athlete, including relay members, must pay $12 one-day fee if they are not a current annual member
  • Headphones/earphones may not be used during the race; doing so will result in immediate race disqualification

Waiver forms
Annual USAT members must show their USAT membership cards at packet pick-up. Those who do not have an annual membership must have agreed to/signed the USAT one-day license waiver online or with a paper application.
