End of summer dance festivities in Rockford and beyond

August is here, and there are still plenty of rhythms to keep you dancing as the weather cools down.

Starting tonight at Boylan High School in Rockford, it’s once again time for Festa Italiana. This weekend event features food, crafts, carnival rides, a bocce tournament, performances by Amici Italiani Adult and Youth Dance Troupes, and tons of live bands! Full entertainment schedule can be found here. Cost is $5. Children 12 and younger get in free, and so do veterans. Not of Italian decent? Doesn’t matter. Everyone who enters is considered an “honorary Italian” and can enjoy the festival all the same.

Another opportunity to dance to live music this weekend is at Sullivan's Irish Pub and Eatery in Midlothian, IL. This is one of the southwest suburbs of Chicago. On August 3rd, Shout Section Big Band will be performing there 7-10 p.m. So if swing is your thing, head down there Sunday night for some great dancing!

A fairly new dance group has popped up in Rockford. Dancing in the Garden takes place every other Monday night at Anderson Japanese Gardens. Your next opportunity to join in is August 11th. It takes place from 7:45 to 9:30 p.m. and the cost is $3. The first thirty minutes is an “improv/blues/fusion” dance lesson, with open dancing following.

Need another event to dance at? Gen Con, the annual weekend long gaming convention, has declared it’s August 16th dance theme as Back to the 80’s Bash. This dance is free to anyone with a badge to the convention; which costs $40 to $80 depending on how many days you wish to attend, and if you pre-register. Yes, this event is a bit far, being in Indianapolis, IN and all. But it’s always great to see multiple forms of nerdiness come together in one place. And if you’re going to the event anyway, why not bring your favorite leg warmers and rock out?
