UPDATE: 8/26/09 Yesterday marked the 50th reward given for information leading to a conviction of dog fighting. This makes the grand total given out $157,470 and has helped over 2000 dogs get rescued from such horrible animal cruelty.
Back on June 25, 2006 a man named Julius Birdine of the Englewood neighborhood in Chicago was killed by a gang member for not allowing his pit bull dog to fight. After a fight broke out Julius was shot three times and killed. This courageous man died trying to save his dog from the fate of a dog fight. Dog fighting is very common to the people of Chicago. On June 27th, 2009 the members of the Englewood community came together and participated in the second annual “Walk for Peace”. This walk was organized by the family of Julius Birdine, the Liberation Christian Center, the Clergy Committed to Change organization and the help of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The HSUS had Tio Hardiman, a special consultant, help with the “End Dogfighting in Chicago” campaign for the walk. The marchers held a banner that stated the campaign name and they also distributed flyers for the “End Dogfighting” campaign.
The Humane Society of the United States has created the “End Dogfighting” campaign in the hope to make more people aware of what is going on. With this campaign they provide people with flyers to pass out, banners to hang and reward posters to put up. The HSUS is sponsoring a reward based program from the help of a donation from the Holland M. Ware Charitable Foundation based in Hogansville, Georgia back in 2007. The donation they gave of $200,000 to help the campaign to fight dogfighting in America has helped fund this reward from the original $2,500 to $5,000. Yes, this has been going on since 2007. Not too many people know there is actually a reward based program out there that could honor them $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest with a conviction of a person accused of dogfighting.
The procedures are real simple for the reward program. If someone sees first hand or knows of a suspected dogfighting person or place, then call your local police department and give them the details. Tell the police department about the reward program with the HSUS so if they actually do catch the people responsible for dogfighting then you can get credit for it. Then you have to ask the police department to write a letter to the HSUS stating you helped with a tip for the arrest and conviction of a dogfighter. The letter then must be faxed to (301) 721-6414 or mailed to the following in order to receive your reward:
