Six years after his first single hit the charts, Justin Moore is finally holding an ACM Award for New Artist of the Year. Justin Moore received the award from the Academy on Sunday, April 6 after loyal fans voted him into the winning position.
Despite controversy that the Academy bent the rules for him, Justin Moore was obviously very touched to win the award. Last year’s winner Florida Georgia Line announced Justin Moore as winner and the singer made his way to the stage after pats on the back from Brett Eldredge and a hug from Kip Moore, his fellow nominees.
When Justin Moore stood before the mic, he hid beneath his cowboy hat and pinched his eyes, fighting back his emotions. When he emerged, ready to speak, he broke up the emotional moment with a joke, “I was beginning to think there was a height requirement for this award.”
When the laughter subsided, he thanked his record label, Big Machine Records, his producer, and country radio for “giving him a voice” and “taking a chance on him.” As he wrapped up his speech and he tried to thank his wife and kids, his voice broke once again.
It’s been a long road for Justin Moore, but winning New Artist of the Year finally solidifies the place in country music that fans knew he deserved all along.
