The 2013 Emmy Awards were held on Sunday, September 22nd this year at Nokia Theater L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. For the most part, celebrity-filled awards’ shows bring out the best in red carpet fashion. However, this year’s slideshow features an equal amount of attractive gowns as unattractive or tasteless choices. Let’s discuss them in overview…
The High Notes of Emmy’s Fashion:
Certain actresses chose bold colors and/or flatteringly-fit gowns for the night. A few of the stand-outs were Sofia Vergara, Tina Fey, Maria Menounos, and Sarah Hyland. Sofia Vergara and Sarah Hyland both chose gowns in all-over lace with plunging v-necklines; Sofia’s in a bold red with trumpet skirt, and Sarah’s in emerald green and black. Both Maria Menounos and Tina Fey looked striking in curve-hugging, bright blue column gowns. Bold colors were also successfully worn by Allison Janney (light fuschia) and Anna Faris (sunshine yellow).
The Low Fashion Notes:
Somehow there were a lot of fashion missteps this year on otherwise beautiful actresses. There was an unflattering fit on Claire Danes, Aubrey Plaza, and Julianna Margulies. While Danes’ dress was beautifully made, it suffered from the fact that it featured a plunging see-through mesh neckline that accentuated the flatness of Danes’ chest. Aubrey Plaza wore a high turtleneck, long-sleeved black and nude gown that didn’t flatter her figure or her youthfulness. Julianna Margulies wore a draped gown that fit more like a bedsheet wrapped around her body. Lena Dunham wore a turquoise dress with peach roses pattern that screamed mattress comforter or grandma’s old curtains. Julianne Hough’s gray off-the-shoulder “dress” with transparent skirt, paired with her messy waves bedhead hairstyle shouted more trashy/tasteless than pretty or classy.
So this year’s Emmy’s fashion was something to see; more low notes than one would want or expect – but at least they’re something to talk about/wonder over. Check out the slideshow to see all the gowns discussed here and more!
