Emmy Awards Past Fashion Trends

When you look at the standout fashion at the Emmy Awards over the years, you can see the trends that emerge on the red carpet. For the purpose of this article and accompanying slideshow, I’ve highlighted the use of shades of red, blues, silver, and gold that actresses have worn to the event.

Showcasing beautiful red or blue tones in the past are January Jones, Kaley Cuoco, Kat Dennings, Zooey Deschanel, Sofia Vergara, Kerry Washington, and Heidi Klum. January Jones wore a particularly interesting dress one year that looked as if it was comprised of shiny blue scales – above the knee in front with a long train in the back. Sofia Vergara also garnered attention with a blue-green mermaid tail like dress that was so fitted to her body that at one point the seam split over her butt and it had to be sewn shut again while she was still wearing it. For this year’s Creative Arts Emmys, Heidi Klum wore a playful blue dress that was covered in trimmed chiffon that was created as part of a challenge for the current season of Project Runway. Zooey Deschanel looked pretty, although also a little bit “fairy princess,” in an ice blue gown with a full, layered skirt.

Celebrating the color red, Kerry Washington shone beautifully one year wearing a red gown with sheer skirt covered in red sequins. The bodice of the dress looked almost like the bustier of a superhero costume. Kaley Cuoco wore a striking burgundy gown with a full skirt and sheer panels on the bodice. Kat Dennings wore a gown in red chiffon that showed off her cleavage.

In the realm of silver or gold, I’ve highlighted Lucy Liu, Julie Bowen, Claire Danes, and Sarah Hyland. Lucy Liu looked lovely, although possibly painfully fitted into a tight, shimmering silver column gown. Claire Danes, who doesn’t always chose the best gowns, looked summery and radiant one year in a nude-gold tone gown. Sarah Hyland looked somewhat angelic in a silver-grey tone chiffon gown that featured tiny flowers embroidered along the neckline.

It seems that there are certain constants that you will always find in red carpet fashion events. There will always be gowns with sequins or crystals – they catch the light in pictures and shimmer. Plunging v or sweetheart necklines tend to be the most popular. You will find some women who chose to wear a printed gown, but after the fact they rarely are received favorably – a solid tone gown is generally the way to go. Popular fabrics are chiffon, tulle, mesh; things that flow elegantly or can be embroidered with sequins or other appliques. Though they must be difficult to walk in, actresses still make the sacrifice to wear full skirted gowns or those with long trains in the back that you constantly have to watch over and keep people from stepping on and possibly ripping your dress. Now that we’ve talked about some trends of the past, enjoy the slideshow!
