It’s official – Emma Watson has no plans to star as Anastasia Steele in the movie adaptation of E.L. James’ blockbuster “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Early this morning, Watson tweeted from her @emwatson account – first with the classic “?” followed immediately by “Who here actually thinks I would do 50 Shades of Grey as a movie? Like really. For real. In real life.”
The Huffington Post reports the rumor may have been the result of the hacker group Anonymous. A Twitter account linked to the organization posted documents allegedly stolen from Constanin, the German film studio which listed Watson as the possible star.
Over the summer, Watson discussed the rumors with Entertainment Weekly and told them, "I haven't read the book, I haven't a read a script, nothing.”
Appearing on "Watch What Happens Live," this week, Andy Cohen asked actor Ian Somerhalder about his rumored casting as Christian Grey. The Vampire Diaries star responded by saying, “I can't say anything other than it's a very interesting story and whoever plays that role is going to have a lot of fun, rehearsal time.”
The film is scheduled for release in the summer of 2014 by Universal and Focus Films. As the film lacks a lead actor, actress or director, it seems hiring needs to be done asap. Due to the sexual content of the book, it is expected to bring an NC-17 rating, which adds another impediment to casting. Until then, the rumor mill will continue to buzz.
