Emma Coronel, a former beauty queen, is the wife of drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, and she was arrested with him on Saturday morning in Mazatlan, Mexico. Emma Coronel and Joaquin Guzman have been married for six years, according to a WebProNews report on Tuesday. Guzman, the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel drug syndicate was finally found and captured in a condominium while he was preparing breakfast.

Guzman, the most wanted drug lord in the world was in his Cullacan hideout a week ago and then escaped through tunnels that allowed him to go to Mazatlan. Yet, he was captured.

Emma Coronel and Joaquin Guzman meet in 2007 when she was 17 years old. They met at a beauty contest in which she was appearing. Guzman was overwhelmed with her beauty and reportedly used his strong influence to get her a victory at the contest. Guzman, who was 47 at the time, married her on her 18th birthday.

Coronel has another connection to the Sinaloa Cartel. She is reported to be the daughter of one of Guzman’s tight associates in the drug syndicate – Ignacio Coronel who is known as Nacho.

Though few details were released last weekend when Guzman was caught, it is now known that law enforcement who made the capture of Guzman entered the 10-story condo where the couple was staying. The law enforcers smashed in their door and had no trouble taking Guzman. There was a rifle within Guzman’s reach, but he did not pick it up. The drug lord did not resist his arrest.

From Mazatlan, he was transported to Almoloya de Juarez’s maximum security prison via helicopter. The charges awaiting Guzman include the sale of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine – which he reportedly sold in more than 50 countries throughout the globe. The United States has appealed for extradition of Guzman to the country so that he can be presented with drug trafficking charges.
