Emirates Team New Zealand wins the Louis Vuitton Cup
Emirates Team New Zealand and Italy's Luna Rossa team competed Sunday in race eight of the Louis Vuitton Cup.
When the race was over, the Kiwis finished three minutes ahead of the Italians.
The 1:10 p.m. start time did not have high winds cancel it like the second race on Saturday. There was heavy fog at the start of the race. The race was held and as what has become the norm, by the first mark the Kiwis had a small lead that grew and grew.
Crossing the line the New Zealand boat had air horns from large super yachts sounding, a San Francisco Fire Department boat was spraying water in the air and the loud cheers of spectators on land was heard.
The Kiwis got champagne handed to them and sprayed each other with the bottles while still on the water.
Following the win, both the Luna Rossa and Emirates Team New Zealand sailors appeared on a public stage. After the Italians were honored it came time for the New Zealand team to take the limelight and to get the Louis Vuitton Cup trophy awarded to them.
The Italian team is going to be helping Emirates Team New Zealand prepare for the America's Cup by giving them a training and racing partner since the Kiwis only have one boat. Oracle Team USA has two boats and thus can race one another which provides learning and practice.
The America's Cup starts September 7 and might run until September 21 in a best of 17 series of races.
