Emily Myren, a local singer and organizer, runs a weekly showcase concert and open mic Tuesday nights at Be Here Now. Be Here Now, a venue located in Muncie's Village district, is a hub of activity for many of Ball State University's thousands of twenty something students and community members. In addition to Emily's Tuesday event, the venue hosts local and national touring musicians and DJs throughout the week.
Emily and the venue are the heart of the local independent music scene. Emily has been running the night "since October 2012," and she features one band and lots of singer-songwriters every week. I am surprised at the amount of talent and diverse array of quality content. Words you can understand are sung right out of the worn journals where they are created.
The audience of about twenty locals and students is very receptive to the music, and also to the beer specials. One bartender told me it was "one of the most creative events in Muncie." Emily says her "open mic is the only one in town that allows for 11 singer/songwriter walk-in performers, a showcase traveling act, and a crowd every Tuesday."
