New York’s R&B Soul songstress Emily King is slated to begin her South by Southwest Interactive Festival (SXSW) tour in Austin Texas but first stopped in Washington DC to Rock and Roll Hotel on March 9 to treat her fans with a live performance.

Emily zealously faces a largely diverse crowd, separated by different ethnic backgrounds but unified by a shared appreciation for independent music.
Dressed in a cream, flower-embroidered crop sweater, navy slacks and white saddle shoes, with a razor -edged Mohawk pompadour, Emily exudes a powerful yet sheer subtlety that is beyond compare.

Creating an intimate ambience for her set, the stage does not include a fancy backdrop or large amount of equipment. The drummer, bass player, keyboardist, and background singer suit Emily just fine.

Opening with ‘Ordinary Heart’, fans endearingly sing along to the electric guitar riff infused track, which serves as a proclamation for fearless love. Just as Emily greets her guests, one fan belts out a request for King to perform her latest single, ‘‘Distance’ as the next number, Emily sweetly obliges the excited fan, while in amazement that the audience is religiously singing the lyrics to the latest single.

Throughout her set, Emily King performs self-penned hits from her most popular ‘Seven’ EP as well as classics from her 2007 album, Grammy-nominated ‘East Side Story’. Groomed as a guitarist by nature, the very soul of Emily King’s musicianship and vocals appears to enthrall the audience into a musical euphoria.

Emily proclaims that at the start of her career, D.C. was like a second home to her. Emily then recalls being mentored by the legendary Bad Boy Entertainment producer Chucky Thompson during her days as a signed artist with J Records. Thompson later surprises her with a greeting on stage followed by an impromptu performance of a co-produced hit ‘U & I.’

Currently braving the biz as an indie artist, Emily adorns fans with news that her next independent release will be coming soon.

Emily King succeeds in delivering a performance of resilient delivery coupled with beautiful, soulful melody. With such success from ‘Seven’, one can safely conclude that that numeric must be Emily’s lucky number.
