Embrace Your Space - A Guide to a Senior's Transition

Moving to a new place can be a scary thing. I get that. This is why it is so important to make this transition as easy as possible and it really is a transition. It is not “downsizing or Rightsizing, it is transitioning. You start out with this big box of a room and you think, how is this going to work? How am I going to make this mine? How do I begin?

Take a deep breath. Let it out and now I am going to tell you how to make this place your own. You call me. I make it all happen.

There are several kinds of clients that I have in senior communities. The ones where I do it all. The window treatments, the color on the walls, recovering some of their furniture or replacing the pieces that will no longer fit in their new place, right down to hanging up their pictures and towels. Then there are the clients where they have a fair idea of what they want to do and I just tweak it. They may only want to do drapery or add a few accessories like lamps or other things. But it usually all starts with color.

I liken moving into Retirement Community as going off to college. New place, new people. All about the same age. The upperclassman have been there for some time and know all the ins and outs of the place and you coming in are just the freshmen. The good thing is that there is no hazing here! Maybe you are a little scared, but mostly you are excited about a new adventure and a new beginning.

So when you move into a dorm room or a new apartment, what happens next? You need to make this place your own. You need to personalize your home. How do you do that? You start with the walls. When you move into a dorm or apartment you are faced with all white walls and the landlord says you are not allowed to paint! Well at most Retirement Complex's, you are allowed to paint and first tool to make this happen is the paint deck! This is one of the most important tools that you can have. Change the color of the walls! We encourage you to try some new color. White walls are not a color. They are just white walls and they are boring and institutional. Your new space is anything but institutional. Embrace your space. Color it!

The next step is the windows. Usually what you have had in your last home won’t work in your new home. Now is the time to freshen it up. New home, new look. Every step of the way we can be there to help you from selection of colors to fabrics and blinds on the windows and getting everything hung, just the right way. So whether is blinds, shutters or draperies… we can make it all happen for you. What ever you look you want to achieve. We can do it all for you.

It all begins with baby steps. One step at a time. Whether you want a familiar look or you want to break out and try something new. After all if you are moving to this Retirement Community, you are wanting something new. Embrace your space!
