betrayed by his receiving corps, especially rookie Louis Murphy who had hands of stone. Murphy had two drops and a fumble. (One of those drops was originally called a catch and fumble, but ruled incomplete.)
The Raiders defense was beyond aweful and into the neighborhood of putrid. The Raiders added on their woes against San Francisco and added unable to stop the pass to their usual inability to stop the run. Drew Brees went 14-17 for 179 yards and 2 touchdowns in only 18 minutes of action.
The Saints did not have a 100 yard rusher, but that is not a sign of improvement. Lynell Hamilton had yards on only 16 carries for a 5.9 ypc. P.J. Hill added 83 yards on 12 carries for 6.9 ypc.
Linebacker Jon Alson summed up their perfomance in one word "embarrasing."
This assessment was also echoed by Head Coach Tom Cable in a few more words as he opened his post game remarks, "That's not how you want to play in the third preseason game. It just seemed like early in the game we could not make a play on either side of the ball. We couldn't get off the field on defense. We didn't tackle very well. And offensively, the sack fumble after two first-down throws kind of set us back."
Alson said that the bigest problem on the defense was their lack of cohesion as a team. "Coming out and playing together. When one part goes down, another part has got to pick it up, and that's what a team is all about." He also cited communication as an issue.
The dismal performance the Raiders put together in the most important preseason game does not portend well for their opener against the San Diego Chargers. The Raiders were shredded on the ground by Lynell Hamilton and P.J. Hill. In two weeks, it will be LaDainian Tomlinson who has a long history of shredding the Raiders. If the Silver and Black looks anything like they did today, Tomlinson will break Adrian Peterson's single game rushing record. For that matter, the Bears' record of most lopsided victory could be at risk.

I didn't get to see the game I went camping but on the way I did hear part of it just 20 minutes into the game they were down 14 to 0, did they suck that bad 45 to 7??? damn, in for along season and the whiners won thier game. Well Al, what you gonna do now?
This is really....... well how can you put it in words. Looks like we're going to continue to be the laughing stock of the NFL. Great!
I guess we could have community tryouts for defensive line and linebackers. Maybe we could convince some grocery clerks and mid level personnel managers who used to play junior college ball to come in and improve our "D?". They probably would be just as bad but at least we could explain away our losses by saying "Hey what do you expect, they're amateurs!" They would work for a lot less and maybe ticket prices could go down to say high school football level. I'm disgusted! Whatever happened to smashmouth Raider football? All we have are a bunch of door mats out there now. "Welcome" ... to score on us that is. Out!
