An animal cruelty investigation is underway following the discovery of an emaciated dog in Spokane, Wash., reported the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS) on Wednesday.

According to Wednesday's KREM News, the owner of a skeletal pit bull has been identified and located by SCRAPS officials thanks to tips from the public.

The emaciated, four-year-old pit bull was found on Saturday in West Central Spokane by a SCRAPS protection officer; the dog was too weak to stand or even lift his head at the time that he was discovered.

The frail dog, who weighed a mere 31 pounds, was transported by the officer to a veterinarian for care.

According to the Spokesman-Review, the veterinarian was unable to obtain a temperature from the dog and made the determination to have the neglected canine humanely euthanized due to the severity of his condition.

If the dog's owner is found guilty of animal cruelty, the charge is considered to be a felony.
