Elton John picks Lady Gaga as godmother

Elton John, who will be touring Western Canada in May, has selected Lady Gaga to be a godparent to his adopted baby son Zachary.

The story leaked during an interview with Sir Elton’s partner, Scarborough, ON native, David Furnish

Furnish was being interviewed by Macleans reporter Elio Iannacci Thursday, and was asked, “Correct me if I'm wrong but Lady Gaga has been named Zachary's godmother. What led you to choose her?”

Furnish responded: “We haven't publicly confirmed that yet but your sources are very good.”

Although preferring not to comment until an official statement had been prepared, the 48 year old filmmaker hinted that Gaga was being chosen because of her role as a strong advocate for gay rights and her efforts in raising HIV and AIDS awareness.

He tells Macleans, “She believes you can be whoever you want to be, we don’t have to live in a world of conformity and we can all benefit from individuality.

That’s the best message in the world – the freedom to be who you are, do what you want and love who you want to love.”

The couple have also asked their good friends magazine editor Ingrid Sischy and her  partner Sandy Brant to be godparents.

Lady Gaga has performed at Elton John’s AIDS Benefit, and the pair played a duet at last year's Grammy Awards, performing John’s hit single  “Your Song” and Gaga’s “Speechless.”

The British pop legend will bring his “Greatest Hits Live” tour to Western Canada in May for a handful of stops before taking his show to Europe.

Confirmed shows include: 07-May-11 Winnipeg, MB  - MTS Centre, 10-May-11 Saskatoon, SK - Credit Union Centre, 11-May-11 Regina, SK - Brandt Centre , and 14-May-11 Calgary, AB - Scotiabank Saddledome
