It’s a nice treat to find good barbecue north of The Mason-Dixon line.
Elsmere will not rake you over the coals or give you the gas when it comes to imbibing on bodacious
BBQ. That's because Elsmere grills softly, but carries a big stick…A big-stick-burning (BEWLEY-handmade-in-The Lone Star State, thank you very much) wood smoker. So there!
Owners Adam Powers and Jeremy Rush love BBQing, grilling, porking, sausageing… they serve everything but the “moo” and “oink”…and they rub their meat lightly, and let the flavors and spices speak for themselves. It’s hard to beat Elmere's meat…when it comes to BBQing or grilling in So Po. Adam and Jeremy have created their own recipe for the Elsmere Sausage. They've created many hearty items for their menu.
The staff and chefs prepare the varieties of proteins in many different and delicious ways - out in the open for all to see. It’s quite a show indeed: Adam and Jeremy are animated chefs and culinary artisans. When it comes to outdoor cooking, they are truly Kings of the Hill; but unlike “Hank”, they do not use “propane or propane accessories.”
Now…to balance out its true-to-Central Texas BBQ style, we must mention the Argentinian wood burning grill. This hot device prepares seafood snagged straight out of Casco Bay. Whether it’s the Fish of the Day or Elsmere’s BB-Q’d oysters, you’ll be able to taste the benefits of their custom-made culinary equipment.
Two mellow dudes with a vision are Adam and Jeremy. These two friends formed a brotherhood of the BBQ and created something special in South Portland, Maine.
Adam and Jeremy created a community-minded, fun, and funky place for the carnivore and leaf eaters to enjoy – dining together. That’s true gastronomical bipartisanship.
The ample menu accommodates the varied and lustful appetites of most carnivores; yet also offers vegetarian fare for those who have a different palate to please. Whether it’s a main staple item or a daily special, there’s a nice variety for just about everyone.
The sides are satisfying and quite reasonably priced.
Quench your thirst with a nice selection of adult beverages from the bar.
And of course, you’ll be pleased with the choices from their main courses and solid sandwiches.
Elsmere is a true BBQ place.
It’s a nice place to bring the family for a hearty meal, and it’s also a great place to unwind with friends for beverages and appetizers whilst watching the game on their huge flat screen TV which sits atop a massive retro style bar.
The bar: uniquely constructed from reclaimed wood from the Shenandoah Valley, various tobacco barns, and whiskey barrel slats. (They obviously know how to get wood, and doggedly use every bit. Except the “bark”.)
So belly-up to the bar and bask in the glow of the 13 ft. Vintage Neon sign which warmly illuminates the mood like a scene from a Film Noir style Hollywood movie starring a buxom blonde who seduces a streetwise detective (hungry for love and good BBQ.)
The ambiance is casual cool, and may remind one of the old roadside dives you’d see on the back roads of Texas. Your olfactory senses will get a workout as the mighty aromas soar from the place like a west Texas wind, and will blow your socks off - before you even enter the dining area.
The dining area: It’s spacious and offers comfy booths as well as short and tall tables for various sized parties and appetites.
The music is upbeat and fun – just like wait staff we encountered.
It’s a great atmosphere with great service and polite servers.
There’s no way one can truly get a feel of a great BBQ joint unless you go and sample the fare.
Elsmere is a place well-worth checking out and supporting.
It’s a great place for BBQ and a fun night out.
I rate it a Double Duley Do!
