An Ellisville, Mo. man was sentenced to eight years in prison for breaking into the home of his ex-girlfriend and viciously beating and throwing her tiny dog into a wall as he burglarized the home.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Charles A. Zidek, 37, of Isleview Drive was sentenced on Monday by St. Charles County Circuit Judge Rick Zerr to four-year sentences for felony animal cruelty and burglary; each term to be run consecutively.
A jury found Zidek guilty in July.
In October 2011, Zidek broke into the home of Daina Walkonis and threw her beloved Italian greyhound named "Vinny" against the wall as he robbed her home. Ms. Walkonis was not home at the time.
When discovered, Vinny was rushed to an emergency veterinarian where he was diagnosed as suffering from severe head trauma and a broken leg. The tiny dog's head and face were so swollen, he couldn't even open his eyes. Because of the severity of his injuries, Vinny was humanely euthanized.
At sentencing, Zidek apologized to the court stating his problems center around steroids and alcohol.
Rest in peace little Vinny. Your torturer is now being punished.
