According to the Huffington Post on Monday, Ellen Degeneres and openly lesbian 2 Broke Girls writer, Liz Feldman are working on a script for a new lesbian-themed primetime tv show for NBC network.
The multi-camera comedy follows a lesbian and her best male friend, who gets her pregnant. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show picks up with the woman becoming pregnant as her friend meets and marries the love of his life.
While Ellen most likely won’t star in the show, she’ll take an active role in the overall vibe and perhaps even some producing and writing duties.
Warner Bros TV and DeGeneres’ studio-based A Very Good Production are producing the show, with AVGP’s Jeff Kleeman as executive producer. Feldman previously worked for two years on DeGeneres’ hit syndicated talk show, Ellen, and wrote for DeGeneres’ first stint as Oscar host. (She returns to Oscar duties on March 2).
If the project goes to series, it will join a long-standing NBC tradition of comedies featuring gay characters, including Will & Grace, last year's The New Normal and the current freshman sitcom Sean Saves The World.
DeGeneres revealed her sexual orientation on her ABC sitcom Ellen in 1997 (with a followup story on the cover of TIME). Her coming out paved the way for more lesbian characters to appear on primetime television.
