Ellen DeGeneres is replacing Paula Abdul as the fourth judge on “American Idol,” Fox announced in a statement, “As the new judge, Ellen will offer her own unique perspective to the contestants throughout the competition. Season 9 will premiere this January.”

Ellen also sent out the following Twitter announcement, "Guess what? Go ahead… nope… keep guessing… Okay, I’ll just tell you--I’m gonna be the new judge on American Idol!"

Upon becoming the fourth judge on “American Idol”, Ellen stated, "I'm thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol. I've watched since the beginning, and I've always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I'll save from not having to text my vote."

"American Idol's" creator and executive producer, Simon Fuller, is equally as thrilled. "I could not be more excited to have Ellen join the "American Idol" family. Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel. I can't wait for this next season to begin."

Guest judges during Season 9 auditions include Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry, and Shania Twain. Ellen will take her seat at the judges' table after the audition rounds commence.

ELLEN?? What does she know about music??? She is just a clown without a red nose... Give us someone who knows what they are doing. Give us a break Idol.. ELLEN??? I got bored with her show after the first season.. This is heartbreaking to me.. I just might have to stop watching.

What is American Idol thinking? Worst possible decision they could have made! They have now lost 2 AI fans, will not watch her that's for sure! A terrible way to ruin a good show.

What the hell is the matter with the negative people messaging?? Ellen being on American Idol might be the best thing that has happened in awhile. She will bring some excitement to the show, she loves music so why shouldn't she judge? All those who are mouthing off at how terrible it is going to be and that they will not watch this year because of Ellen....you aren't true fans of American Idol if thats the case. Nothing changes if nothing changes, and American Idol was due for a change and this is a good thing. If you dont want to watch.... then DONT WATCH! I think Simon Fuller knows what he is doing considering this show is going on it's 9th season. Grow up people!!!!

Ellen had a busy week. She was named the new judge on American Idol and was sued for music copyright infringement by the recording industry. Please visit the Arts & Entertainment section of Examiner.com/detroit for my take on everything Ellen.
