Ellen Degeneres hosts the 86th Academy Awards, breaks twitter

The 86th Academy Awards ceremony took place last evening, crowning a new stable of Oscar winners, while also providing many memorable moments sure to be in the media for the days to come. Acclaimed movies like 12 Years A Slave, Dallas Buyers Club and Gravity won big, while another notable, in acclaimed crime caper American Hustle, was completely shut out. Here are a look at last night's memorable moments as well as the full list of Oscar winners (see below).

The event, which was hosted by actress/host/comedian Ellen Degeneres (returning for her second stint as Oscar host), was not your average Academy Awards ceremony, by any stretch of the imagination-- when was the last time you heard of pizza being ordered at the Oscars, or a Best Supporting actor nominee (Bradley Cooper) being handed a lotto scratcher as a consolation prize?

From Ellen's opening dialogue, it was clear that the evening would take on a different form than past ceremonies. No celebrity was safe from Ellen's round of jokes which often found the crowd in uproarious laughter while playing along with Degeneres' routine. Some of the evenings noteworthy moments included the comedian poking fun at everyone, including herself, in typical Ellen fashion, and may have also been responsible for breaking twitter after taking the selfie retweeted around the world featuring herself along with Bradley Cooper, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, and Brad Pitt.

Ellen's jokes were just a hint of the funny she brought at last night's event from Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Ellen also ordered pizza and shared it among some of Hollywood's A-list-- gowns and tuxedos weren't enough to keep the likes of Martin Scorsese, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Chiwetel Ejiofur and others from enjoying a few slices.

Here are some highlights from the 56-year-old comedians barely filtered routine: "Possibility No. 1: 12 Years a Slave wins best picture. Possibility No. 2: You're all racists. And now, welcome our first white presenter, Anne Hathaway."-- speaking on possible best picture winners; "I have to say, one of the most impressive Liza Minnelli impersonators I've seen in my life. Really, seriously, good job, sir." — to Liza Minnelli (Ryan, USA Today).

The evening was not short on memorable moments which saw the first African-American director accepting the award for Best Picture (12 Years A Slave) in Steve McQueen as well as returning Oscar winner Cate Blanchett and first-time winner Matthew McConaughey receiving Best Actress and Actor nods for their roles in Blue Jasmine and Dallas Buyers Club. Lupita Nyong'o took home the award for Best Supporting actress for her role in 12 Years A Slave beating out Oscar favorites Julia Roberts and Jennifer Lawrence for her first golden statue; the actress appeared very taken back by the award, giving a remarkable acceptance speech and paying her respects to pain others endured which allowed her to bring life to her character in 12 Years A Slave, Patsy.
