Ellen DeGeneres gives 'American Idol' hopeful a second chance

Today, Feb. 4, on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellen DeGeneres interviewed American Idol castoff Jessica Bassett. What made this situation unique is that Bassett didn’t even make it through to Hollywood after her audition, which aired last week during the Salt Lake City episode. Bassett played her guitar and sang an original song, titled, “Lydia,” which was enough for judge Jennifer Lopez to send her through, but not enough to impress Keith Urban or Harry Connick, Jr., who both agreed she wasn’t ready.

Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, took to Ellen’s Twitter page to express their feelings when Bassett didn’t make it through:

Portia and I are watching #AmericanIdol. We think not sending Jessica Bassett to Hollywood was a big mistake. Who's with us?

Someone posted the tweet on Bassett’s Facebook page, and she wound up on the show. Bassett told DeGeneres she had written her audition song for her best friend after seeing her post about her bad day on Facebook. After speaking with DeGeneres, Bassett took the stage to perform her original song, “Lydia.” Afterward, Ellen made the announcement that the single would be available for download on Beats for the next 24 hours and reiterated the exciting news on her Twitter page:

.@Jessiisme didn't make it to Hollywood on #AmericanIdol, but she made it to my show. Now her single's on @BeatsMusic
