Tony Okungbowa, the resident DJ at The Ellen DeGeneres Show has taken a leave. Tony, a staple on the show for much of the past ten seasons, was said by Ellen on the season 11 premiere Monday to be "pursuing other parts of his career" and will "drop in from time to time." Working with Ellen is just Tony's day job. Okungbowa is from England, and a trained actor. His acting roles include guest spots on The X-Files, NYPD Blue and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Monday's show featured "tWitch," who entertained the audience with not only tunes but his incredible dance moves. Guest DJ's will be working with Ellen throughout the season.
Since the beginning of talk show time, shows have had their own entertainment in the form of bands or DJ's. It's a lot easier for a host to ask a band leader or DJ how their weekend was than the audience. The position of musician can't be replaced because it fills a gap in a talk show segment that may not otherwise be filled. DeGeneres' DJ theme bodes well with her infamous dancing at the end of every monologue. Ellen is sure to have some great guest DJ's this season, but we will all miss seeing Tony on a regular basis!
