Ellen DeGeneres knows how to throw an Oscars party. The Emmy-winning talk show icon took her hosting duties seriously at the 86th Academy Awards on March 2, ultimately “breaking” Twitter after posting a star-studded selfie.
According to Variety, DeGeneres’s record breaking tweet of a pic of herself with a slew of celebs that included Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, and Kevin Spacey, caused the social media platform to crash. During the live Oscars broadcast, the comedian announced that she had received an email from Twitter that confirmed her group selfie caused the outage. DeGeneres’s goal was to break the record for the most retweets, and by Monday morning the pic had already been retweeted nearly 3 million times.
DeGeneres also threw an impromptu pizza party during the usually-stuffy ceremony. According to People, A-listers Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, and Brad Pitt indulged in a mid-ceremony slice after DeGeneres asked who was hungry. Ditto for Dax Shepard, Harrison Ford, Corinne Fox, and Channing Tatum. Oscar winner Jared Leto took a slice for his mom, while Leonardo DiCaprio opted to pass on the pizza.
The hostess with the mostess also did damage control when she corrected John Travolta’s bumbling intro of singer Idina Menzel. For some reason, the actor introduced the “Let It Go” singer as “Adele Dazeem.” After the performance, DeGeneres made sure to emphasize the Tony winning singer’s correct name.
