Henderson came in sixth place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2012. Little Mix was the winner of "The X Factor" U.K. in 2011 and was the first group to win on the show. Henderson and Little Mix are both signed to Syco Music, the record company co-owned by Simon Cowell and Sony Music. Cowell is a creator/executive producer of "X Factor" and "Got Talent" shows around the world.
According to the Official Charts Company, Henderson's first single, "Ghost," debuted at No. 1, with about 132,000 copies sold in the U.K. in the song's first week, making it one of the fastest-selling U.K. singles so far in 2014. "Ghost" was co-written by Henderson, OneRepublic leader Ryan Tedder and producer Noel Zancanella. Tedder and Zancanella produced the song, which was reportedly recorded at Tedder's recording studio in Denver on Jan. 12, 2014, Henderson's 18th birthday.
Henderson's first album, "Chapter One," will be released on a date to be announced.(Click here to watch Henderson's Official Charts interview in which she talks about to "Ghost" being No. 1 in the U.K., writing the song with Tedder and her collaborators on "Chapter One.")
Meanwhile, girl group Little Mix's "Salute" (the title track from the group's second album) jumped from No. 24 to No. 6 on the U.K. singles chart. Sales for the song were no doubt helped by Little Mix's performing "Salute" on "Britain's Got Talent" on June 7, 2014. Little Mix performed the song with dance troupe Diversity, the 2009 winner of "Britain's Got Talent." Little Mix's Jade Thirlwall is dating Diversity's Sam Chaske, while Little Mix's Jesy Nelson is dating Diversity's Jordan Banjo. Both couples have been together since 2012.
"Salute" is Little Mix's ninth single and the ninth consecutive Little Mix song to reach the Top 20 in the U.K., beginning with Little Mix's first single, "Cannonball," which debuted at No. 1 in December 2011. Little Mix's other Top 20 U.K. singles so far are "Wings" (No. 1), "DNA" (No. 3), "Change Your Life" (No. 12), "How Ya Doin'?" (No. 16), "Move" (No. 3), "Little Me" (No. 14) and "Word Up" (No. 6).
Henderson's first single going to No. 1 was widely predicted by those who saw her as a contestant on "The X Factor" U.K. back in 2012. Her "X Factor" elimination on Nov. 18, 2012, was one of the most controversial in "X Factor" U.K. history. In the show's voting results, it was revealed that Henderson and James Arthur were in the bottom two. When the show's four judges deadlocked on which contestant to eliminated, the elimination was based on which contestants got the lowest number of votes from the public. That contestant was Henderson, whom many people had believed was a frontrunner in the competition, due to Henderson getting consistently high praise from the show's judges.
In the end, Arthur won on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2012, and he got a record deal with Syco Music as part of "The X Factor" prize. "The X Factor" U.K. weekly voting results of 2012 that ITV revealed after Arthur was named the winner showed that Henderson was never in the top two of getting votes. The highest she placed in getting votes was third place. However, many people correctly predicted that Henderson (who has been compared to Adele) would end up with a major record deal, regardless of where she placed in "The X Factor" competition.
Ironically, in the same week that Henderson's "Ghost" went to No. 1 in the U.K., Arthur confirmed reports that he has been dropped by Syco. An unnamed source told the Daily Mirror that although Syco was satisfied with Arthur's music sales (he had hits and successful concerts in numerous countries), he had become a "liability" due to his controversial behavior, including several feuds on Twitter and his reported "meltdown" in November 2013, which resulted in him cancelling public appearances for a few weeks. Before Arthur was dropped from Syco, he was openly critical and insulting of Syco and "The X Factor."
