Actress and AIDS/HIV activist Elizabeth Taylor died today, March 23, following a battle with congestive heart failure. She was 79. Taylor leaves behind two memoirs in addition to a lengthy film career. Her books include ElizabethTakes Off and Elizabeth Taylor: An Informal Memoir.

Her colorful life from a child actress who became a screen legend to her personal life that included eight marriages, among them Richard Burton and Michael Todd provide an enthralling read. It’s a read filled with tragedy, such as the death of her beloved husband, Todd, and filled with joy at her many accomplishments, including two Academy Awards and the Jean Herscholt Humanitarian Academy Award in 1992.
Born in England, she and her family moved to Los Angeles in 1939. She became a child star known for National Velvet. Her career blossomed along with the woman. In addition to her acting career, she became a staunch fundraiser for AIDS. She started the Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation to raise money for support services and prevention.
