ELIZABETH TAYLOR by Joe Sioufi

Article by Joe Sioufi - She was always dressed like a movie star: hair done, makeup on and lots of jewelry. Never would you see Taylor in jeans and a T-shirt. She wore the role of movie star all the time, and she didn't apologize for it.

Hollywood icon and Academy Award winner Elizabeth Taylor has died at age 79. She was surrounded by her children Michael Wilding, Christopher Wilding, Liza Todd and Maria Burton. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Elizabeth (February 27, 1932 – March 23, 2011) made her big screen debut in 1942 in There's One Born Every Minute and was best known for her roles in National Velvet, Father of the Bride, Butterfield 8, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Cleopatra. She was the first Hollywood star to earn $1 million salary.

Taylor made sure everybody, from boyfriends and husbands to reporters, knew that she liked gifts and that she expected them. After all, one of the most important diamonds of all time, a 69 carat stone, was a gift from husband Richard Burton. It is now known as the Taylor-Burton Diamond.

The actress' past health setbacks included a fall from a horse during one of her early film shoots, bouts with pneumonia and skin cancer, a tracheotomy, treatment for alcohol and painkiller addictions, and lung, hip, brain and heart surgeries. She had anywhere from 30 to 40 surgeries, according to biographers.

AIDS activism had become Taylor's real work long before she gave up acting. Her passion in raising money and AIDS awareness brought her an honorary Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, in 1993. She was the first to create an Aids foundation, gave millions for people in need, sick & charities.

Taylor received the Legion of Honor, France's most prestigious award, in 1987 for AIDS efforts.
In 2000, Queen Elizabeth II made Taylor a dame the female equivalent of a knight for her services to charity and the entertainment industry.
