Kidnap survivor and American activist, Elizabeth Smart has been touring the talk show circuit to outline her horrific ordeal as a teen. From “Dateline” to “The Dr. Oz Show” Smart revealed some of her darkest moments in captivity and how she created her own path to recovery, which included the start of a happy marriage.
As a kidnapped victim, Elizabeth Smart never believed she would see her family and friends again, and told Dr. Oz how devastating that loss was as a young teenager.
I remember just being heartbroken over the thought of what I had lost and what I would never have. So when I was rescued, I was so excited to come back to high school. I was so excited to have all the normal parts of life that I'd thought I'd missed out on forever and I didn't want to miss a part of it.
Elizabeth Smart’s story has a happy ending, she met and married her very “own Prince Charming”, Matthew Gilmour, who, upon first meeting, was unaware of her history and nine-month long nightmare.
And so finding my own Prince Charming and getting married and having a family was one of the biggest and most important things for me. Those were something I thought I'd never have, and I knew how important my family was. I mean my parents and my brothers and sisters and I wanted to have that. And I'd seen how these two (her kidnappers) acted, I've seen how every life they had touched, they had destroyed, and I knew I didn't want to be like them.
"The Dr. Oz Show" with Elizabeth Smart is scheduled for Thursday, October 17; check local listings for airtimes.
