On Monday, January 27 Deadline reported that Elizabeth Banks will direct the highly anticipated comedy film "Pitch Perfect 2," the sequel to the smash hit comedy about college a cappella singing competitions. The film will be a directorial debut for Banks, and is scheduled to be released in 2015.
The original film is based on the book "Pitch Perfect" by writer Kay Cannon, who also penned the screenplay for the film and will write the upcoming sequel. Banks was a major part of why the original film became a movie and served as a producer. She also had a small role as a commentator at the singing competitions throughout the film.
The first film was a box office success and earned over one hundred millions dollars and spawned several chart topping hit songs. Actress Anna Kendrick covered the song "Cups" in the film, which inspired a music video and went viral. The film also starred Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Rebel Wilson and Skylar Astin. There is currently no casting information for the sequel available since the project is still in development.
"Pitch Perfect 2" is expected to be released in theaters in 2015. The film will be produced by Max Handelman, Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer and Banks. Cannon will serve as a co-producer as will Jeff Levine. The sequel could cover the new group of Barden Bellas and Treblemakers as they face another year of college after the events of the previous film.
