Elisabeth Moss wins Golden Globe for 'Top of the Lake'

Elisabeth Moss won a Golden Globe for her performance in Sundance Channel’s critically-acclaimed miniseries, “Top of the Lake” on Sun., Jan. 12, 2014. It was the first Globe win for Moss, who is best known for her role as copywriter Peggy Olson in AMC's drama "Mad Men."

The actress produced a viral moment when she was on the red carpet by flippantly flipping off the E! mani-cam, with unknowing encouragment from Guiliana Rancic. When she won the award, Moss caused the censors to bleep out her naughty four letter expletive.

Moss garnered the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television at the 71st Golden Globes. The nominees in the category also included Helena Bonham Carter ("Burton and Taylor"), Rebecca Ferguson ("White Queen"), Jessica Lange ("American Horror Story: Coven") and Helen Mirren ("Phil Spector").

“We are so happy that Elisabeth Moss’s performance in ‘Top of the Lake’ has been acknowledged by the Hollywood Foreign Press,” said Sarah Barnett, Sundance Channel President and GM, in a press statement released on Jan. 13. “We want to thank everyone involved in the making of 'Top of the Lake' and want to congratulate Elisabeth and all the other nominees and winners.”

"Top of the Lake" is an original miniseries set in the remote mountains of New Zealand,. The story is about the mysterious disappearance of a 12-year-old pregnant girl. Moss portrays Robin Griffin, an inexperienced detective who investigates the case and makes uncomfortable discoveries about her past along the way.

"Top of the Lake" stars Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men,” On the Road); Oscar winner Holly Hunter ("The Piano") as GJ, BAFTA nominee Peter Mullan ("War Horse," "Trainspotting") as Detective Al Parker, AFI Award winning actor David Wenham ("The Lord of the Rings," "Australia") as Matt Mitcham, Lucy Lawless (“Xena: Warrior Princess,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Spartacus: Vengeance”) and Jacqueline Joe as Tiu.

Elisabeth Moss and Holly Hunter have both been nominated for awards in the upcoming Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. Elisabeth Moss has also received the Critic’s Choice Television Award and received an Emmy Nomination for her performance in “Top of the Lake”.

The miniseries was co-directed by Oscar winner Jane Campion and Garth Davis and co-writer by Campion and Gerard Lee.“Top of the Lake” is produced by Academy Award® winners Emile Sherman and Iain Canning (The King’s Speech, Shame) of See-Saw Films, and Philippa Campbell (Black Sheep) of Escapade Pictures. “Top of the Lake” Executive Producer for Sundance Channel is Christian Vesper. “Top of the Lake” is co-produced by Sundance Channel, BBC TWO, and UKTV in Australia and New Zealand. BBC Worldwide distributes the television series internationally.
